Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) est le plus grand festival de heavy metal au monde. Il se déroule tous les ans dans la petite ville de Wacken en Allemagne. Il a attiré plus de 60 000 participants en 2006 venant du monde entier.
La première édition se tient en 1990, à cette époque ce n'est qu'un petit rassemblement de groupes locaux allemands. En 1998, le festival est devenu majeur en Europe et est le plus important au niveau mondial, il ressemble alors plus de 70 groupes venant d'Europe, d'Amérique du Nord et d'Australie. W:O:A se déroule généralement début août et dure trois jours, pendant lesquels les festivaliers campent sur le terrain entourant le festival lui même. Les prestations des groupes se déroulent sur quatre scènes séparées. La réputation de W:O:A est tellement bonne que certains groupes se reforment spécialement pour y jouer.
